About the Event

What better place to begin our new series than with this great peak of European civilisation? Known within Bach’s circle during his lifetime as ‘the Great Passion’, the St Matthew Passion has been universally recognised as the pinnacle of Protestant devotional music since its rediscovery in the 1820s. The first performance of the work in England was in 1854 directed by William Sterndale Bennett, who later became Principal of the Academy.

Performed on historical instruments.
