About the Event

Bach’s sustained engagement in theology fed the development of his musical poetics throughout his life. In this concert we hear how he and his great predecessor Buxtehude responded in their Christmas music to the mystery of the incarnation. Hymnody was a central source of musical inspiration to both composers, and Buxtehude’s chorale prelude Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern introduces Bach’s more extended treatment of the same material in his magnificent cantata of the same name.

Performed on modern instruments.
