In this concert we explore some of the deeper roots of Bach’s musical world. Erhard Bodenschatz’s Florilegium Portense, published in Leipzig in 1618 and 1621, is one of the largest collections of German motets sung in Saxony and Thuringia in the early 17th century. One hundred years later Bach used the collection at St Thomas’s, going so far as to order more copies of it for the Thomanerchor. Palestrina’s Missa sine nomine was also in Bach’s repertoire at Leipzig – an unlikely point of contact between the leading contrapuntists of the Roman Catholic and Lutheran traditions.
