Art Night 2019/Sacred Bands/Georgina Hill with Mark Springer

About the Event
Art Night is London’s largest free contemporary art festival.
Sacred Bands is a moving image and music installation, inspired by Plutarch’s account of the ‘Sacred Band of Thebes’, the greatest army of the ancient world comprised of 150 pairs of male lovers.
Artist Georgina Hill directs a split-screen projection using archival footage of wars spanning the last century, incorporating original music by Mark Springer, with text by David Flusfeder. The work shows solidarity with the unwitting subjects of war, and a critique of patriarchal violence — considering notions of masculinity, institutional homoeroticism, glory, and death.
Sacred Bands is based on the opera Army of Lovers, a previous collaboration between Hill, Springer, and Flusfeder which was developed, and produced by Charlotte Horton and Castello di Potentino in Tuscany, where it premiered in 2018.
Opera singers Alexander Gebhard and Emmanuel Papadopoulos will sing live during the performances.
